Mark & Joyce Denzler
Seed has been the Denzler family business for more than 30 years, and IPSA board member Mark Denzler has been at the helm of the family-owned company out of Rushville, Indiana for the last 22 of those years.
DS Brand Seeds was first established in 1986 by his father Don Denzler, a hardworking entrepreneur. Mark joined his father in the family business in 1994 and took over in 1996 when his father retired a decade after starting the business.
At that time, along with his wife Joyce, Mark incorporated the company as Denzler Seeds, Inc. Soon after, they purchased a seed processing facility in Central Indiana. The company grew and improved over the next decade.
To this day, Mark serves as President of the company that has since transitioned into 1st Choice Seeds®. This rebranding occurred when Denzler Seeds, Inc. purchased Bird Hybrids of Tiffin, OH in 2009 and the two companies merged under one name.
His duties as the leader of 1st Choice Seeds® do not prevent Mark from committing his time to furthering the future of the seed industry by serving the IPSA member companies he credits for helping him when he first started in the seed industry.
“Today, this same spirit of cooperation still occurs to the great benefit of agriculture and the farmers we serve,” Denzler says. “We find common ways to collaborate on issues that face all of us. I share a great satisfaction with other independent brands of being part of a seed industry that works together in this fashion.”
Denzler expresses gratitude for those who have helped him accomplish so much in the industry he loves, including the Lord and his wife of 33 years. Mark and Joyce are involved in their church community and enjoy traveling together and outdoor sports. They have three daughters, the oldest daughter, Jessica, is a cardiac nurse in Richmond, Indiana while also pursuing her Nurse Practitioner credentials; Lydia, their middle daughter, and her husband Matt work in the IT industry in Chicago; and their youngest daughter, Abby, lives in Arizona with her husband John, a Marine. Their time at home as empty nesters is filled with music, woodworking, and gardening.
